Innovative Help for Children with Reading Problems

The latest research indicates that what we call dyslexia is primarily caused by the inability to recognize and reproduce the components of speech sounds. Those with reading problems seem to lack the ability to process sounds at speed. My hypothesis is that private singing instruction specifically adapted to the needs of children with reading problems could be very useful.

Why singing lessons might help

Singing is the production of speech sounds over an extended time on specific musical notes. The abdominal breathing exercises that begin a singing session encourage an individual to be in a relaxed state. Vocal exercises isolate individual vowels and consonants and focus on the production of these sounds. Learning songs whilst looking at a text can help a child link the sounds made with the words on a page. In addition, the rhythmic aspects of musical instruction could aid a substantial proportion of “dyslexics” who also have coordination problems.

Will simply any private singing tuition help?

Perhaps any exposure singing through traditional lessons may aid reading skills, but this program involves specially designed elements to help your child learn to read.   A side benefit will be expert musical training.

Is this a proven method?

No, I am presently developing a new approach to help problem readers based on the latest research on dyslexia.

Who is the instructor?

During this stage of the program your child has the opportunity to work with the developer of the method who is an experienced singing teacher, international performer and recording artist. I hold a Master of Music in Vocal performance and have been teaching singing privately and on a university level for over twenty years in the United States and the UK. My students have included professional singers, university students (many with “dyslexia”) and both young and mature amateurs. I specialize in foreign language diction, performance anxiety reduction as well as bel canto vocal technique. I have taught many successful performers and teachers.

I am presently accepting a very limited number of students for a two-week course of intensive therapy. These students will have the opportunity of working directly with me, Lori Joachim Fredrics, at a cost that will be fifty percent less than it will cost to work with the teachers I will train once the program is fully implemented.

How does it work and what is the cost.

After a free telephone consultation you may book a one-hour in person diagnostic session for your child during which I will evaluate your child's language, reading, musical/vocal skills and willingness to participate in singing. If we believe that your child may benefit, you can then book a series of 10 half hour sessions.

1-hour diagnostic session £ 50

10 half hour sessions @ £20 per session
